While 1997's 12 PICKS collection contains nearly all of the choice tracks from Ace Frehley's four '80s solo releases, several standouts were missing. Megaforce Records issued LOADED DECK, a second ''best of'' collection, less than one year later. Similar in setup to its predecessor, the compilation features both studio material and previously unheard live tracks. But LOADED DECK contains a pair of previously unreleased studio tracks, as well. While it doesn't compare to Kiss' 1978 double album/single disc anthology DOUBLE PLATINUM, most Kiss/Ace fans will enjoy LOADED DECK. A few questionable tracks are included (such as the Tod Howarth-penned power ballad ''It's Over Now''), but selections like ''Do Ya,'' ''Shot Full of Rock,'' ''Separate,'' ''Stranger in a Strange Land,'' and ''Remember Me'' are highlights. The two aforementioned studio outtakes, ''One Plus One'' and ''Give it to Me Anyway,'' are worthwhile as well, as are the live versions of ''New York Groove'' and ''Rock Soldiers.'' Pairing two very similar sounding instrumentals together at the end of the album (''Fractured Too'' and ''Fractured III'') may have been a mistake. Overall, however, LOADED DECK is another solid collection of Ace Frehley's best '80s solo work.
